What Ultimate Tensile Strength really means

Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) is the tested maximum load a hose restraint can withstand before failure. NCG publishes UTS ratings based on actual destructive testing, not theoretical calculations.

Testing is carried out on equipment with National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accreditation and calibration. That means the results are accurate, repeatable and compliant with standards.

UTS vs Aggregate Breaking Strength

When comparing hose restraints, you may also notice references to Aggregate Breaking Strength (ABS). It’s important to understand the difference.

ABS is a theoretical calculation based on the combined minimum breaking strength of individual wires – not the restraint as a complete system under load.

This is why UTS figures are always lower than ABS figures. And because it reflects real-world performance, UTS is the benchmark that really matters.
